Miss-leading Requirements ?

System Requirements - Windows 7/Windows XP/Vista

By Posted November 6, 2009 13:17:13External Link

I purchased this under the assumption that when it says Windows 7, that means it will install. Now, $20CAD later, I get this message on impulse

"This program is not compatible with your current operating system"

If I check the requirements through Impulse, then I get this "Windows XP (32-bit), Server 2003 (32-bit and 64-bit) and Vista (32-bit and 64-bit)" ..

Where was this information earlier ? I paid my money and now I feel I've been cheated.

The products page clearly has Windows 7 Listed, the Compatible with Windows 7 Logo, etc. Now here I am, short $20, and the same icons I started with. I am very disappointed.

For reference, I am running Windows 7 x64 Professional.

I'm sure this is best addressed by Stardock staff, but I believe that IconPackager is intended to be updated for Object Desktop 2010, which means that it will be fully compatible with Win 7. It may be that that particular program is still in beta at the moment.

This link (http://forums.wincustomize.com/?postid=367639) indicates that IP 5 will be Win 7-compatible. I'd be surprised (but I can't speak in any official sense) if it weren't compatible with 64-bit 7.

IconPackager5 is compatible with 7 64 bit but you will need Show Pre-release versions enabled on Impulse Click top left button > Preferences to tick it. That is the way with OD subscription hopefully same with a solo IP purchase.

The requirements on the product page should reflect the requirements of the product sold today.

Not a future product that as far as I know has no release date, and no guarantee that the an upgrade from 4 to 5 will be free.

I believe it has been said that any software you buy today that will be updated to windows 7 is going to be a free upgrade.

And saying windows 7 supported is misleading for the standalone product, since as far as I know the betas are only available for Object Desktop customers.

I might be mistaken though, so don't take my word for it.

The IP page does say it supports 7 so you should be able download the IP 5 beta. Have you done as Ausvet suggested to see if it was availible to you?

If it's not, I suggest contacting support so they can get it straight for you.You should change this post to the support forum so it won't get overlooked. Stardock is well known for taking care of the customer

I have enabled the Show Pre-Release Versions.. Nothing.

I've also contacted support just after making this post, no response yet.

Hi Ryoken,

If you can do it, I highly recommend that you purchase Object Desktop Ultimate.  If  you do, you will get tons of goodies and a free upgrade to the new streamlined version of Object Desktop when it comes out in December.  You will also get a second year of the new Object Desktop for free which is a good deal.  When the new version comes out, there will be only one version instead of two like there is now.  To get the deal though you need to buy the Ultimate version for $69.95.  Then you will be able to download IP 5 beta which is working well with Windows 7.  I have the 32 bit version though.  I held off on buying Object Desktop for quite awhile because I wanted to learn WB and Skin Studio and sort of test the waters a bit.  It ends up costing more that way but I don't mind.  Now that I have Object Desktop Ultimate, I feel like a kid in a candy store.  Still playing around with some of my new toys and having a great time. [e digicons][/e] If you don't want to buy Object Desktop you will have to wait until IP 5 is released to use IP with Windows 7.

Hopefully a Stardock rep will see this thread this weekend and point it out to tech support for you.
Just so you're aware, tech support is off on the weekends so it will more than likely be next week before you get a resolution.
As I said earlier, Stardock is well known for taking care of their customers so please be patient as I feel certain they will resolve this for you in a timely manner.

I hope so..

As for getting Object Desktop Ultimate, I'll pass on that.. Price aside, there is nothing other than Icon Packager I want.. I already make my own custom themes, so I don't need Window Blinds, and the rest is stuff that holds no interest to me at all.. Hell if I was still in XP I would be changing icons manually, and still have no need for icon packager, but as it is not in Windows 7, that is more trouble than it's worth, so I decided to take the "easy" way.. heh..

And I'm glad to see it was an honest mistake.
