what is your current system?

i would upgrade if i would:

-running vista

-have 4+ gig ram

-need dx10+

(i recently switched to win 7 from xp and it was not necesary, but it was gratis)

I usually don't recommend upgrading to any new OS but for Windows 7 do it.

Is windows 7 that good? I am current running XP and have been doing so for a while. I am kind of worried about upgrading to that OS.

The very basic question you need to ask and answer is: What do you use the computer for?

In most cases what you use the computer for will dictate whether you upgrade or not.

Well I use it for school and also I have been playing with manipulating my desktop and such.

Oh also I am entitled to the OS for free and don't have to buy it.

in that case there is no reason why you shouldn't upgrade if you don't even have to pay for the os itselfperticually as stardock and other manufacturers will stop supporting xp in the near future

Ok - Well I just started messing around with Stardock. I haven't bought the full program yet, but I am thinking about it.

If its free for you, then you can try it and if you don't like it, simply downgrade to what you are using now !! Also be sure of creating a backup before upgrading.

Well, I had been using Vista Ultimate for almost a year now and just did a clean install of 7 Ultimate [e digicons]:thumbsup:[/e] All I can say is that im never gonna use Vista anymore.

preferring win7 over vista is like preferring drinkingwater over piss. it is assumed that normal ppl dont drink piss ...or vista : )

im far more interested in the opinions of people who have used xp and then upgraded to win7.

agree with inerz, I have heard that windows 7 should be immediately taken over vista but if you have XP (like I do) that there is not much need for windows 7 yet (though Im sure there will be soon)

Ryat you are using an os that is over 8 years old in trems of technology thats like stoneage also its more appropriate for xp users to upgrade then it is wor vista users as i said xp will be dropped from support in a few years

yes, I know it is old, but old is not always bad, look at Vista (and if you read my statement in parentheses you would know that I already recognized that this will happen someday, the question is when?)

the main reason for the win7/vista upgrade is improved system performance/stability

the differences from xp to win7 are mostly pretties and dx11

the cause of the new os is M$ wanting a lot more MONEY by forcing everybody to the latest OS, just as they did with v#@#$@$@#$@#$@$@$@#$@#$@#$@#$@$ta release which NEEDED a two magnatude computer performance increase, but one one magnatude was available.

and I have been in the betas of both vista & win7 and of the two vista is and was a megaload of manure while 7 was actually releaseable, but still use xp as it gets in the road of my working least, win7 slightly more irritating and vista as the MOST irritating OS yet released INCLUDING msdos 4.00 and windows ME

Look, M$ made mistakes with Vista. Lots of them. It was to resource-heavy. It was bloated. I had a desktop I built (ASUS mobo, 4gb ram, nVidia 9600 SLi, blahblahblah, you get the point) and it took Vista Ultimate about a year to boot up completely. Rediculous. I ran the Win7 Ultimate RC for about 3 months on a laptop and it took about 45 seconds to boot completely. That was ALL processes.....

XP and Win7 are bot great. It just depends on what you want. I know this much.... if Win7 were free for me, I'd have it installed in a flash. .......

i dont see any ressourcewise differences between vista 64 buissiness and win 7 prof. exact the same boot up time, memory usage and others... absolutly no differences.

in fact, i would heavly wonder if there were some to see as it is basically the exact same os with some more or less superficial enhencments.

So far I have installed Win 7 on 3 machines in place of XP [both 32 and 64bit] and will be adding it to 2 more yet, not to mention VMWare machines.

Eventually the only installs of XP I'll have will be in VMWare.

XP was an OK OS in 2001.

Life moves on....

If you would tweak Vista a bit, it would run smooth, If you tweak Windows7, it runs super smooth !! That's the difference. And using Xp, now for me is like going back to 98 ME !!

I currently have Windows 7 Proffesional x86 upgraded from Vista, 4gb of ram and 256 ati video card on my laptop, everything is really really fast.

Sins of the Solar Empire runs around 20% faster.

Windows Search is 10x faster, and Windows 7 feels alot more stable then Vista, and bootup and shutdown is alot faster.

I recently upgraded an XP machine AND a Vista (32) machine to 7.

The Vista I upgraded to the 64 bit 7 using a program called PC Mover Upgrade Assistant by Laplink

that moved my settings AND programs to the new OS. A few I had to re-install but so far most of them

are working well!

I used the same program for the XP machine and even though I was upgrading from 32 bit to 32 bit,

there were problems with the OLD XP settings that screwed it up and I had to re-install the programs manually.

As there were only a few programs on the XP machine, it wasn't a big deal. The Vista machine has almost 200

programs and games so I was glad that one worked. Having had problems with the older XP system for some time, I was kind of expecting it to fail.

I've been expecting something to go wrong, M$ to rush out a patches to fix up problems until the SP1 comes out, computer crashes, the usual things that happens.... But no I have been found wanting.

Windows Pro 64bit is the best investment I have spent on my home computer to date. Runs like a dream and will do me for the next five years or more.

If your computer is running the way you want, don't bother. But if you are looking to upgrade to a leaner more stable OS (Vista was bloatware hell) this is the way to go!!!

Vista was alright. It was just too glitchy for me. If OEMs would stop loading machines with crap (Really, HP? over 100000 files just to tell me my machine needs a DVD backup and how to use my webcam? What the hell ever.) Windows wouldn't have the bad name it does.

I am not buying another laptop that isn't from store.microsoft.com (ala not preloaded with crapware.)
