What is the best RPG.....?

What is the best RPG of all time you have ever played? That includes MMORPG, Action RPG, pure RPG.... etc.

PC games of course.

For me it is "The Elder Scrolls 4 Oblivion".

I never had any problems with Temple until you were fighting the Balrog - and my video card would say "Screw *this* shit" and have a fit. Three different PC's gave me the same issue over the years - run great through most of the game, then roll over and die at that spot.

Fun until then though - I recall a female fighter with a pole arm and great cleave in a room full of archers - "And *YOU* get to die and *you* get to die and *you* get to . . . tell ya what. Everybody dies." - <G>

I may try it again when XP gets reinstalled, or try setting it up under wine. Too much fun not to.

For ePSXe, Golgoth, why can't you install it? 64-bit Windows comes with 32-bit compat libraries so it shouldn't have a problem with it, does it show an error? if so post it, perhaps we can help you troubleshoot it.

As for Neverwinter Nights it's a single-player RPG, though you can play it multiplayer cooperatively like Diablo 2 or such and I believe there are mods to play it as an MMO as well. But at its heart, NWN is still a traditional, single-player RPG (one highly recommended btw, and it even runs on Linux!).

For me, it is definitely Final Fantasy, the best role-playing game I have ever tried and enjoyed. I wonder what tops in the gaming industry today?

I don't have much new to add to the list, but: Morrowind, Baldur's Gate 2, Planescape: Torment, Chrono Trigger, Star Control 2, Fallout 2, Curse of the Azure Bonds, Questron, and BATTLETECH: CRESCENT HAWK'S INCEPTION!!!

To people who say games like Mass Effect aren't RPGs: oh please. Being purist on a topic like this is dull.

EDIT: DARKLANDS!!!

November 5, 2009 23:22:36

For those scoring at home - Although I can't afford to, say, buy Planescape brand new ($170+ new?!?!), it turns out Amazon *does* have the entire Baldurs Gate I+Sword Coast+II+Throne of Bhaal for about forty bucks, which is about what I'd seen people charging for the expansions on Ebay before (I have I and II, but neither of the expansions).

I picked it up just for the expansions, but if you've never played, it really is a classic.

I consider Mass Effect an action RPG. Yes it is an RPG.

Ok Morpheaus your a babe for pointing out that emulator

Now I have Windows 64bit so I cant install it ><
And I know its daft but is Neverwinter Nights a MMORPG or am I looking like a fool right now?

It is an exe file and  doesnt need an installation. It should work in 64 bit but i havent tried it (i have XP 32 bit).

Neverwinter Nights is one of the best RPGs ive ever played and it is a D&D RPG. Singleplayer with a multiplayer feature but it is suggested for single player only. I dont know if people play it multiplayer. You can compare it to Baldur's Gate or Temple of Elemental Evil, they are very much alike.

Oh and... keep in mind that you need a working BIOS to make the emulator working, and unless you extract a BIOS from your own real PSX, it is illegal to Download it or get it from somewhere else. Just saying.

Temple of Elemental Evil.

YES! A very underrated game.

Although for me it has to be Baldur's Gate series.

In terms of Pen and Paper RPGs, Unknown Armies has the best game mechanics I've ever seen.

ToEE is the best, but you gotta d/l the community mod [which is an amazing "mod"] for it, because the retail game is a bugfest. It's even better than Dragon Age imo.

Borderlands [e digicons][/e]

Because i don't like the slow, boring RPG styled games much.  But Borderlands is fast paced and less "walk here, walk there"

November 6, 2009 15:11:20

I will have to say Heroes of Might and Magic 3 Compleat +web unofficial expantion.

But if that is too RPG-Light then i would have to say the Fallout series

Dungeon Hack.  D&D Nethack with updated graphics.  And without the fetal-position-inducing difficulty level.

November 7, 2009 06:24:36

Eh Rosco...So you've mentioned a roguelike? Well, well...the best roguelike is Incursion imo.

Thats me screwed then. Oh well.

If you count MMORPG, then Eve Online, no game has as much drama and surprising stories as the ones created by its own players.

November 9, 2009 18:05:50

For me it has to be Balder's Gate 2.  Best combination of story, tactics, atmosphere, etc in my opinion. Surprised I am not seeing this one more as peoples favorites.

Other favorites in no particular order would be Ultima 3 and 4 (never played 5 or 6), SSI Gold Box games, Wizardry 6 (went to scifi-ish after that), Morrowind, Wizard's Crown, Bard's Tale 1 and Vampire The Masquerade - Bloodlines.  Although there were a lot of other good ones posted they just never stuck with me the way those did.

Currently playing Dragon Age at the moment and loving it.  Can't say yet if it is good enough to one day make my all time favorite list but can tell I like it better than anything released in the past few years at least (Obvilion, Fallout 3, Mass Effect).

Indeed. I have played EVE online for only 1 month or so, but in that time i lost a ship in which i had invested a LOT of money and it was just too..... dramatic.

Intense!

For roguelike games I prefer ADOM(Ancient Domains of Mystery).

It's status as an RPG is debatable, in my opinion, though certainly a solid game overall.

I second that -- it's not so much an RPG as it is just a very strategic FPS; excellent game, nonetheless.

Theres two servers on my local that have been full for 5 years...though IRL they may just be cobwebs and bones at their keyboards now, their characters are there everyday hustling and bustling. Great little game that...helped me understand the true glory of the evil cleric.
