What will the desktop of the future look like?

I ask the question because I have no idea and I am curious if some of the more experience folks out there have first hand knowledge.

For the most part, even from what I have seen of Windows 7, if would appear the PC desktop is still pretty much 2 dimensional. The only exception that I seem to find is a some third party software for an open source OS, which the name of slips my memory at the moment. [e digicons]:-"[/e]

I would have hoped that with the multi core processors and faster memory and 64 bit systems being common that new and exciting Graphical User Interfaces would have been developed by know. I have seen those peeks at some stuff by Microsoft but when are they going to be available and at what price? And no, touch screen ain't it.

I would really like to see some try at doing 3 diminsional interfaces. I think Stardock has some programs that would benefit from what could be some nice capabilities. Now I'm not saying WindowBlinds, not sure have that would work, but possibly DesktopX could be made a lot more interesting being in the 3D environment. Imagine widgets or gadgets that could be zoomed in or out on. It would allow more items on the desktop without concern for resolution settings.

How about something like a information cube. You have six sides or surfaces in 3D to use for time, weather, systems info, etc., with a zoom function that again would take up less space when not in use.

It seems rather of waste of everyones time with all the advancements in hardware that this technology has not move forward by now.

So those are my thoughts, how about yours? It would be nice to see someone from Stardock reply here, might just give us something to talk about.

I'd love to see a holodesktop and keyboard (laser one exists) where an actual filing cabinet, or bank of them could be accessed by hand motion, and eye motion with a verbal interface also.

I'd love to have a virtual/"paintbrush" and xacto knife, tools, etc. for making "Blinds" or skins for this office....a movie house to watch movies in....

A connection between my home, office and car....with a 3D holotank/GPS showing realtime where I am/distances to the destination speed, etc...and speed traps, weather and fuel efficiency bleed-ins...and the ability to access my home holodesk anywhere...

Tocuh screens are a joke IMO, not ergonomic whatsoever for the home user serious about graphic design.

As far as 3d goes, been discussed quite a bit before, rendering 3d constantly on a dektop would be extremely processor intensive.

In addition, very few in and around WC are even slightly competent at 3D design.

Not saying it couldn't be done, but I'd check back in about 20 years. I think if real 3D was anyhere close to being a viable solution MS would be all over it.

Everything in that video can be done faster, more efficiently and with more precision... with a mouse.

Hopefully more like XP than 7.

You might want to qualify your statement, John.....

Re future OS interface....a computer monitor is [currently] 2 dimensional [ignoring time] so ALL interfaces are/will be 2D. What attempts to pass for 3D are not...in the same way as wearing those tacky '3D glasses' are NOT 3D image reproduction.

If anything, the 'next' shake-up of the OS GUI will be along the lines of those horrible iPhone thingies....touch-screen scrolling/interface...with a keyboard as an accessory....the mouse may yet meet its maker...

I expect hologram interfaces [real 3D [?]] will be bypassed/discarded in favour of direct mental interfacing.....'think it and it happens'...

Has not a damn thing to do with customization. Native 7 beats Native XP hands down. Take a poll if you doubt common sense.

U have your opinion.. i have mine. Diff. is I know what I'm talking about regarding the UI and that is what I was referring to in response to the OP's mention of stardock products, 3d environments and customization.

I shall repeat, I hope the future of the desktop resembles XP more than it does 7\Vista.

A technicality, Windowblinding isn't UI design. It's changing the appearance of the existing design that is inherent in Windows. Some minor moving items around is allowed, but sorry... you aren't designing a UI.

I never said designing a ui, read correctly. I'm just very familiar with how it is all put together what areas interact with others and as that compared XP to Vista\7. Got zero to do with ego mate. I do however do ui design work too.

So a car designer isnt really doing car design because what he "designs" have 4 wheels and a steering wheel?

Anyway the desktop of the future making it touch isnt viable because working with something where you have to move your hands and arms all the time. I think it will be more of what OCZ released the NIA maybe in conjunction with some sort of holodesk and some voice commands. Or maybe a full immersion where you connect your brain ala Ghost in the shell (that would be cool!!).
