Custom Battle

By Posted September 30, 2009 19:09:51

Ima get flamed for this but...........what the hell.

As much as I enjoy conquering the AI or another player, planet by planet. But Id like to see a custom battle add-on.

Basically same thing happens as in any custom battle. Choose your location, choose your conditions, choose your units.

You could face off against fully upgraded starbases or just unleash hell against another Super Fleet.

Again i know people are gonna shoot holes in this, but..........id like to see it in this game.

Idk....it has a possibility to be interesting. I'd certainly give it a shot.

September 30, 2009 22:17:51

Yeah.  And I'm sure it'd make testing things like unit balance and such much easier too.

October 1, 2009 01:22:36

Why would anyone flame this?

You just want a skirmish mode. That's a fairly stock option on most games like this.

October 1, 2009 01:54:00

idk there are some hardcore conservatives in these forums Change is Evil, and so is obama...........

October 1, 2009 09:30:46

Look, just because I made a mod that changed a capital ship name to the Jarrasul Obamanator ...   j/k

People throw about crazy ideas all the time.  Yours are no worse, and there's some merit to be sure.  However, I have some reservations.  I can see it going like this:

  • Day 1 of release: cool!  I get to line up all my favorite ships and see what blows away what!!
  • Day 3 of release: man, I really need to get some sleep pretty soon
  • Day 5 of release: you know, I really liked to play the ______ race, but now that I've ran 50 tests I find it's really imbalanced.  I'm going to go complain on the forums a bit until they change things with the next expansion.
  • Day 6 of release: I want to go play a full game, but it wouldn't feel right until these things are fixed.  I'll hold off and play some GalCiv or Demigod in the meantime.
  • Day 100 of release: Hey, it looks like Diplomacy is out, but unless they fixed those balancing issues I'm just not going to like it very much ...
  • Day 3245956 of release: Hmm - is that Sins 2 I see on the shelf?  I remember that game - it was kind of like Homeworld, but much better  .... *sigh* if only they'd learned to balance ____ and ____ , then it would have been a classic.

I guess I just worry about it becoming a tool to complain with instead of something that can just be toyed around with.  For instance, many people complain about the LRFs (perhaps the recent patch will tone that down), and most notably those of the Advent.  I've always been of the mind that imbalances within ship classes are supposed to exist, to be balanced out on a larger scale by less favorable matchups in other classes or tech advantages/disadvantages.

I NEVER want to see this game go the way of World in Conflict, where the only differences that exist between a T-72 and an M1A1 are the textures used.  I fear, perhaps irrationally, that setting up an easy test bed for players is the first step down that path.

Players already test things out, seems like to me that it wouldnt matter much if they added a custom battle option or not the complaining on the forums is going to continue. By your logic, you would have quit along time ago cause this game has been severely imbalanced for a long time. SO. That doesnt mean that a Custom Battle option is gonna be the downfall of SoaSE, maybe for people obessed with the math of the game yes......cause lets face it. their nerds. And they just cant be happy with something until they have it exactly the way they want it. (im joking) Anyway Custom Battle would give them a better foundation to test things, but for the majority of players who dont spend countless hours just to prove one HC is more powerful then the next, it might be some fun to be able to just smash two HUGE fleets against each other without the countless hours you have to spend currently just to either chase your enemy down or stay on the run yourself.

So we can expect Sins 2 to be released around 8900 years from now?

Would be nice to be able to set up battles and pick the units you want.

Perhaps have it contained in a single gravity well so the A.I. can't run away.

October 4, 2009 01:19:53

that was my thoughts. be like a Stand and Fight or Lose Everything kindof deal.

October 9, 2009 12:52:41

Guess this idea isnt that debatable

Perhaps you don't really have opposition to it. It is a good idea. I hate it when the AI runs away, even on Unfair Aggressor. Trap them in a single gravity well and make them fight to the death.

October 9, 2009 14:03:08

yeah but i was hoping to see alot more people speak up on it.

So that the idea would get more notice? That's understandable.

Question though, what should such an arena be called? Arena? Testing Ground? Death Match? Good Luck?

October 9, 2009 14:42:18

I would just call it a Custom Battle. Didnt give it much tought about its name.

October 9, 2009 15:08:12

You know I REALLY REALLY like this idea!!!!

Sorry to shout!

can we get some dev's eyes on this? there seems to be a universal agreement.

We probably need to keep the thread going. I suggest that there be a topic of discussion about an aspect of this idea. My above suggestion was to discuss the name, of which Custom Battle is good. But I suggested the name of it because altering a name doesn't affect the content of the idea. However, to keep this thread visible, with actual conversation instead of bumping, some topic about this idea needs to be discussed.

October 9, 2009 16:22:36

Yeah good idea numerarius!

so we hav custom battle

or..... battle simulator?

or........ the DANGER CHAMBER!!!!!!! it has a ring to it.

October 9, 2009 17:48:28

Battle Simulator sounds good to me. Sounds like its a training simulator for officers in training which keeps it inline with it being canon.

October 9, 2009 19:20:23

Would it be only in a single gravity well or would it be an entirely customized set up of everything?

October 9, 2009 19:50:31

single gravity well. right allegiance?

October 9, 2009 20:25:55

i like this idea. sounds cool

i would suggest two grav wells. or three, so that tactical retreats do become an option. there would be no defenses, however (unles you added them, of course).

i like battle simulator, arena, or testing ground, in terms of names

October 9, 2009 20:44:13

What would be really cool is to have 4 of each of the three faction's starbases, fully upgraded, battle eachother in a stellar gravity well.

October 9, 2009 20:51:32

isnt that a little unfair? since the vasari starbase is their anti-structure vessel? so it is purposely designed to destroy other starbases?

October 9, 2009 21:14:53

I don't think so. Depends how you upgrade them. I've had my Argonevs destroy a few Orkulus, on it's own. Don't know if the Orkulus was fully upgraded though. I had set up my first game of Entrenchment so that I would be allies with an unfair aggressor Vasari, having locked teams. After all planets had been colonized and all gravity wells, except magnetic clouds had a fully upgraded Argonev (with the upgrades of 2 weapons systems, 3 structural integrity, and 3 hangar space), I saved game and reloaded it with teams unlocked. The Vasari Unfair Aggressor perhaps didn't upgrade any of his Orkuli, because all of them were destroyed with only one of mine being close to destruction due to proximity of the missile batteries in addition to the orkulus' attacking.
