Windows Defender ...

Battering me with POPUPS ! Grrrrr !

By Posted July 24, 2009 11:04:19

Ok Guys and gals ! Hopefully a quickie question and answer ...

Every day / night / TIME ~ ~ that I turn my PC on I keep getting a popup from Windows defender saying I have not scanned my PC for "X" ( being the number ) of days and my PC is at risk if I do not scan ..

Being a creature of habit .. I always scan with defender while I am having my dinner ... so its a daily routine for me , and always has been ..

BUT it still popsup very annoyingly ... which leads me to some questions ..

1. How do I stop this happening ?

2. Is it a really necessary prog to use ...

3. What alternatives are there ? ( if any)

I already use AVG , CC , Iobit disc defrag and registry cleaner and Iobit security360 as well as Advanced System care , again from Iobit ....

oh, and Spybot S & D ... I run those apps every 3/4 days ...

4. So , Do I really need Windows defender  ? If not is it easily uninstalled  ?

Sorry about the Big font , people ... I have mislaid my spex ... [e digicons][/e]

Mike

No, window's defender is for computer illiterate old people, so if Your running all of those programs (seems like a bit of overkill to me haha) Then you don't need it. I found this guide. Hopefully that helps.

Go to Security Center in Control Panel and turn Windows Defender off if you are running AVG..  Defender is not very effective.  Don't mess with trying to uninstall, it could cause more problems that that would solve.  At times it's handy to have, like when doing a Windows reinstall and you haven't gotten AVG installed yet.  Hope this helps. Hi Mike,

Windows Defender is not the best way to scan your PC, I read an Article a few weeks ago and it was written that Windows Defender scans ONLY inactive Spyware but NO active Spyware. Defender did not identify 1/3 of the active Spy- and Adware and the Program does not check incoming E-Mails and Downloads. So, i hope i could help you Mike and sorry for my english.

PS: It's better to use a Security Program like Norton 360 or Kaspersky.

Illiterate old people, my goodness how the kids around here don't ever think they will get 'old' or that they won't ever be talked about in the same way.

For those that don't know Window's Defender started life out as a 'thired party' piece of software.  MS obtained it and made some changes to it. Like any piece of software folks are going to have opinions as to how good it is at what it is supposed to do.

I used to run several spyware cleaning programs and clean up programs.  Running all of them does take time.  I now run just one all in one program, and no I'm going to say which one because someone will say 'oh I wouldn't run that one'.

run what is sufficient to make you confident that your computer is clean and not infected with 'bad things'.  I would think you could stop running Defender and still have things covered.  Just my opinion. [e digicons]:sun:[/e]

I found that if you use CCleaner and have it set to clear Defenders logs,it will "forget" when it's last scan was. I just unchecked it in CCleaner and the problem went away. It now shows the last scan every time and I get no pop-up or tray notice.

Windows Defender is like an empty suit of mail: looks impressive, but doesn't do anything. [e digicons][/e]

I believe no antivirus or anti-spyware programs are required to be installed on your system if your hard drive is properly configured.

Windows Defender is like an empty suit of mail: looks impressive, but doesn't do anything.

Defender is not very effective.

Windows Defender is not the best way to scan your PC

Defender, according to me surely is a good option to scan your PC.

"Windows Defender is able to detect and remove threats posed by spyware and other potentially unwanted software. Also includes Real Time Protection to monitor key points in the operating system for changes"

Infact I do not have any security software on my system except than Windows Defender and to be very honest my system never got infected in the past 5 years.

And my notebook which had Kaspersky2009 installed on it, just got infected the last month. Can call it Bad Luck !!

Why are you running all those apps every 3 to 4 days? Overkill. Not needed. Maybe every 2 weeks at the most.

Everyone has different needs and situations. It's not overkill to him, most likely.

For instance, my Mom was smitten with a bad virus once. Since then, she is exceedingly careful about everything on her machine. Overkill to me, but not to her.

Perspective is the key.

It has nothing to do with perspevtive. Running defrag every other day is not a good thing.

July 25, 2009 00:53:13

Running defrag every other day is not a good thing.

....yes...it is.

July 25, 2009 01:03:22

So it will not wear out the drive? I defrag once every other week.

July 25, 2009 01:05:17

So it will not wear out the drive?

No

July 25, 2009 01:13:22

Well if you say so. Thanks. I retract my previous statement.

Hahaha Know I'm not stupid I fully expect taht when I'm old I'll be talked about the same way ha. It's the way things work, The young always bash the old, and they recieve the same treatment when they get there.

sometimes it'll happen when you're still young.

And sometimes it happens that you like things that noone else of your age likes (example- Jefferson Airplane's 'Somebody to Love', and others from that era (1960s-70s)), or you like things that no one else your age understands (at least in my neck of the woods) understands what you like.

Of course, a lot of what I like has to do with modding (Phase Out Hull with movement/jumping/shooting woohoo!), which so far no one else here in Gulfport Mississippi (you've probably never heard of it till now) understands.

July 27, 2009 01:15:42

Windows Defender wasn't great when it launched, but it's a very good option now.  Soon it'll be replaced by Microsoft Security Essentials, which is a GREAT antivirus AND antispyware tool.  The AV vendors are going to have a fit since they're going to lose tons of money over this, but who cares?  As usual, there'll be plenty of mudslinging and people claiming things aren't good enough and they'll be ignored by the general populace who either knows better or doesn't care.

I'd be very happy with Defender for spyware if I wasn't on MSE already.

July 28, 2009 03:20:30

I was one of the lucky ones that got to try the new Microsoft Security Esentials package that was released a few weeks ago and I've been putting it through its paces on a Windows 7 machine and I am very impressed. Reports from many other users a very positive. One guy downloaded a package of 8,000 virus's and threw them at MSE and it's detection rate was as good as some of the 'paid for' AV's. Microsoft are still developing MSE and it will be released later on in the year FOR FREE!!!! I suspect the free offerings from AVG, Avira and Co are on 'borrowed time' and the 'paid for' stuff like Kaspersky, ESET, Norton, McAfee etc etc are rather nervous. Let's see [e digicons]|-)[/e]

Sure, I've heard of Gulfport. I've even been through there a few times over the decades. Nice country, and very nice beaches along the Gulf coast.

So, is the correct spelling noone, or no one?
