How can you increase Torrent speed?

By Posted June 17, 2009 13:02:04

Bit Torrent is ridiculously slow. I'm getting averages of 6.0 kb/s. It's taking fucking forever, and I'm pissed because I have really fast internet. (Another reason not to pirate games, takes forever with Torrents.) Does anyone know how to increase torrent speeds?

Buy what your torrenting [e digicons][/e]

Its a know fact that once you buy the product your torrenting it speeds up 8.9% faster.

I usually get speeds of 1MB/s with torrent sites. But that's after I've gone to BestBuy and purchased a game. And also I'm installing from the CD/DVD.

Be lucky enough to have simultaneous connections with as much leechers as possible... file sharing based on peers has a knack for unstable "speeds".

Get a better modem.

Download from real sites.

Buy what you want, server side or otherwise!

I have to say that this was probably not the best place to post a torrent question, however, I think it is wrong for everyone to assume he is downloading something illegal since torrents are also used to download legal content. I have a torrent program that allows me to download videos of animations people create and post for downloading, some are even series. It's better quality than those you find on youtube, in some cases they are HD. One can also download demos of some games thru torrents and trailers can also be downloaded thru torrents so not everything torrent related is necessarily illegal. To say he should buy what he is downloading is basically condemming someone as a criminal for the acts of others and that does not seem fair. I use torrents all the time and have no illegal software on my computers.

I was just stating that torrents work better after you get frustrated with the speed and just go buy whatever he is trying to download.LOL, Irony at its best. If you can buy it that is, otherwise your stuck with whatever speed the seeders are putting out minus the ammount of leachers.

I generally don't believe in piracy. The only times I'll download something is if it falls into several categories: It's vaporvare, abandonware, the developer is gone, or if I can't get it at a store.

How can you download vapor(w)vare?

 Buy what your torrenting

very often (at least in my case) you can't buy what your torrenting.  Things like AMVs (AMV hell in particular), community movies like Star Wreck and Big Buck Bunny (I know you CAN buy these, but they are officially distributed for free by the creators via torrent), foreign or very old movies/games (that I wish I could buy, but can't), and dare I say it, porn (why would you WANT to buy some of that stuff?  some high quality movies should, but the "wierd stuff" can't be purchased anywhere that I know).     the point is, a lot of people torrent legitimate things, so its a valid question.   And I can't think of anything I torrent that I could run out and "Buy" to recieve the same experiance.  Otherwise I would.

(this might be a special *me* thing, because my friends make fun of me for it)  or you're torrenting it because you're too lazy to find the disc you have purchased (its a bad habbit of mine, but its so much easier to watch a digital copy than to find and put in the DVD.  Especially is the case with some movies I own on VHS and I don't feel like getting the DVD copy right now because it doesn't have enough special features to make it worth it or something similar)

To the OP.  It really depends on what your getting.  try downloading one of the AMV Hells.  (usulaly about 2000 seeders at any given time) and if you're not pulling off more than a few 100 kbps at least, then your ISP must be filtering torrent packets (which an ISP could do if they wanted) or your internet is not as fast as you want it to be.

Having a good router than can handle a ton of connections helps too.   Make sure your required port(s) is/are open.  And don't let your upload limit be above what your service can handle (you didn't say how fast your connection was, but when the torrents are off, run a speed test and make sure your torrents are never above your upload.  Also bear in mind that most speed tests are in 'bit' where torrents are measured in 'bytes' which would be 8 times the bit number).

There are many other things you could check too, most of which I don't feel like going into.  Personally I like to keep the number of connections at the same time to a minimum and try to force higher MTU, but others would recommend against that.

I didnt understand that joke.

He's either saying "Don't use Windows" or he's just curious to see if someone will delete the Win32 folder, effectively screwing their computer beyond recognition.  ...At least, I think that's the point.

I think he might be suggesting that the person asking the question is a pirate and that he deserves to have his system totally Eff'd up.

if you want the torrent to run faster, first you meed to set the download  bandwith to max or unlimited.  then you need to turn upload off.  also it is best to let the torrent run at night

June 24, 2009 02:06:37

use Utorrent, it is faster.  better yet, if you have friends who have a business internet, use theirs for download.

I have friend who owns an internet cafe, he pays X amount of money  per year to get accessed to a server that have 1000s of games, whichever game he wants, he can get.  If there is something that i can't buy at store or i need it really fast, i just get him to download it for me, otherwise, i just go buy the thing.

Telling people to delete their win32 folder is not nice.

I think its funny.  Sadly, windows won't let you completely mess it up that way (at least no modern version.  windows ME might, because I swear it deleted itself sometimes), without at least some back-door like booting up another OS

I don't think he was saying torrents are bad with that statement.  I'm pretty sure he was just making a joke.  In theory, if you removed all those pesky Win32 files, you'd have more memory available for torrents.

If you're experiencing issues with Bit Torrent speeds, head over here. This thread was created to trouble shoot issues with Demigod multiplayer, however as Demigod uses P2P for that, it works for Bit Torrent as well. The solution that fixed my Demigod multiplayer also fixed my Bit Torrent speeds.

I just download during the day. More people are seeding then anyway.

dare I say it, porn (why would you WANT to buy some of that stuff?

Thank you for the excellent idea.[e digicons][/e]

Also, use MuTorrent. Small memory footprint, very configurable. Check your port forwarding. Check that your ISP is not throttling download speeds for peer to peer sharing. Check your firewall settings. If you use a router, check that its configured properly. And finally, leave a torrent running for at least 15-30 minutes before deciding if its too slow. Sometimes a torrent client needs some time to link up with all the peers to get you a high net download speed.

Torrents =/= Piracy.  It's a good way to distrubute legal stuff (big pathes, Linux Distros).  Torrents have been painted with the broadest brush possible, to the point when anyone says 'torrent' they assume you are pirating.  [e digicons]#[/e]
