£11.99 and I'm still not willing to buy it

By Posted June 2, 2009 18:25:36External Link

Sins is one of the best RTS games i've ever played. and i've been more than willing to pay £25 for it. however i don't want to use impulse.

Since release i've been waiting patiently for it to come out on steam and yet there is no sign of it what so ever. even the shops are selling it dirt cheap because its been around for so long, but i've got waaaaay too many boxes and i'm only interested in buying digital versions of games since i no longer have space in the real world.

I think that everyone should have the choice to be able to buy the games that they want to buy through their provider of choice, theres plenty of them out there. I know that some prefer "Direct 2 Drive" and "Gameplay" etc and i'm sure that impulse has its fans too but me I LOVE STEAM.

Steam is my games provider of choice because i like the service, the interface etc etc etc. but thats my choice and i'm still willing to pay £25 for sins as long as its available on STEAM

so even though its available for £11.99 i'm gonna have to ignore it and continue playing other games until stardock realizes that there are tons of games who do not want a boxed copy and would their games through their digital provider of choice.

The world doesn't function according to your quasi-eutopian ideals. Enjoy your lack of sins.

You're missing out.

June 2, 2009 20:14:23

Um... why would Stardock ever put Sins on Steam? Stardock owns Impulse and publishes Sins, so why would they then put it on their competitor's service? Since that is never going to happen, you're either going to have to buy a box, use Impulse, or just not get the game.

I will give you credit, though, you are one of a very small group who doesn't want a box.

June 2, 2009 20:27:39

um... okay... but you are missing out

i can tell you with some certainty that Sins wont come out on Steam because Impulse also acts as an Auto-Patcher for the game.

you could always install Impulse, download the game and update it, then uninstall Impulse afterwards, although you will have to re-install it to get updates etc...

But honestly, i have to say some people have some funny (arrogant) ideas about their rights

in the meantime... i guess its your loss

I have Impulse and Steam on my PC.

June 2, 2009 20:55:23

I highly doubt Stardock will be relasing its games over Steam anytime soon.  They own and developed Impulse, so they'll likely keep using it.  It would be like expecting Valve to release Half Life over Impulse.

Honestly, the only reason I have Steam on my computer is because I bought The Orange Box.  I'm actually really annoyed that I had to install Steam (and really annoyed that I have to keep it running) to play my games.  At least Stardock games need not have Impulse to work.

Sorry for the minor rant.  Obviously, the whole Steam vs. Impulse thing is just my opinion.  Back to your original point, I wouldn't hold your breath.  I doubt Sins will use a non-Impulse digital distribution mechanism.

Edit: Man, I'm slow.

You do know that you can have impulse and steam don't you?

Um... why would Stardock ever put Sins on Steam?

We'll gladly start just as soon as Valve starts offering their stuff through Impulse.

June 2, 2009 22:05:05

It will never come out on steam. Period. Get over it if you want the game. Steam is valve's DD platform and Impulse is Stardock's. They won't comingle their games to the other system (ie Half life will never be on impulse). Or you can go to a store and get it.

As for choosing your DD platform, thats what Stardock's new GOO DRM system is all about

In my opinion, steam has a better community system and store selection than Impulse (I'm just not an IRC person). Other than that, Impulse is better in every way (much better download speeds, it doesn't randomly disconnect, looks better, it doesn't need to be running for the game to run, only to update or install...).

June 2, 2009 22:15:36

Well then go play with steam!

Enjoy the "I must be connected to their cr.p servers at all times in order to play" or the "Game won't update for 24 hours on end because servers are down again".

Just get digital download form impulse..it's easy to do! Just as easy as steam and you'll be able to play it offline!

IMAGINE NOT HAVING TO CONNECT TO STEAM IN ORDER TO PLAY!!!

Impulse marks a new dawn in digital distribution does it not +_+

June 2, 2009 22:17:01

Sins will be available on Steam when Half Life and other Valve games are available on impulse. 8)

I hate download programs so I'll just have to look stupid if HL is available, but it seems a bit silly to give your competition amunition against you.

June 2, 2009 22:33:54

impulse isn't bad, i havn't had any problems with it. if you haven't already you should give it a try.

June 2, 2009 22:35:27

Your loss.

I really don't see the problem.  Download Impulse, purchase and download Sins and the expansion and makes sure to put an icon on your desktop.  Close Impulse.  Play Sins and never have to open Impulse again (until you need an update).  It's not like you have to sell your soul to Impulse in order to play Sins.

June 2, 2009 22:38:46

dude... if you want to play the game on multiplayer, you kinda have to use impulse anyway to update...

when your done updating you can delete it, you never need to use it again (till they update again or you want the expansion pack)

June 2, 2009 23:24:28

SINS will be on Steam sometime after the Half-Life series is on Impulse.

Seriously, since Steam and Impulse are direct competetors don't expect them to share exclusive games.

Plus I am pretty sure patching for Steam would be a hassle at best and a major problem at worst.  To my knowledge Steam uses normal patches that have been modified to be compatable with Steam to update(at least that is what I have heard).

Impulse does not use patches for updates.  It checks to see what files have been changed and then only downloads those files.  As a result Ironcald really only needs to upload a new version and Impulse takes care of the updating for each person.

Short version: Won't happen and Impulse is better at updating than Steam.

EDIT: Strange, none of the replies above me showed up until after I posted this.  May be a problem with the forum update

June 2, 2009 23:33:44

Bad luck. You miss out. They use Impulse as it is THEIR digital distribution channel, rather then someone elses.

Considering Impulse is needed to patch the game, and you need an up tp date install to play Sins online, not sure it will happen anytime soon.

You also don't have to run Impulse to run to start the game (only patch it / buy something new) - unlike Steam which won't let you start your game...

Build a bridge and get over it... Either you want the game or you don't. Why would Stardock ever want to pay money to someone else to sell you a game in exactly the same way as they can sell it directly to you?

June 2, 2009 23:41:55

Just buy the boxed copy and throw the packaging away dude.

Well you will be waiting a very very very very long time. Pretty much till the end of time. Maybe you can tell Soase to be available on steam at the omega point at the end of the universe..thats if it exists. Otherwise you're screwed because stardock published the game and since they have their own digital distribution platform it will never come out on steam.

June 2, 2009 23:59:20

Ok, normally I lurk on this board but this made me extremely angry.

First of all, your saying to distribute digitially and ironclad is through stardock's impulse. Then you complain it's not through steam. Well, see, when two companies are in a publisher agreement they make rules such as don't work with the enemy. Impulse and Steam are two opposing digital distribution models and why would Stardock help a rival?

Secondly, Impulse is nowhere near as intrusive as Steam and is much less of a memory hog. Steam is one og the most annoying pieces of software EVAR. Not only does the thing need to be on while I'm playing, it also autoupdates my games and breaks all my mods even when i turn off autoupdate. I had to use Steam for Empire Total War and its nonsense lead me to just torrent a game I had legally bought because I could not play the game how i wanted.

Impulse is much better on the merit that if you don't want to, you don't even need it to atcually play the game, just pop in the cd, install and play. Unlike Steam where even with a cd, you need steam to register and download stuff.

Well, your lose[e digicons]:waaaa:[/e]

June 3, 2009 01:14:41

You assume you speak for the masses.  Have fun with that, they're not going to put it on STEAM unless their analysts say it's a good move to do so.  Meaning... You won't be playing Sins unless you get over it and buy a boxed copy(you realize you can toss the box after, yes?) or buy it off Impulse.

June 3, 2009 01:22:55

Do you go to the Honda reseller and demand a BMW? Or do you want that every online shop sells everything that exists, because you don`t want to change the shop?

June 3, 2009 02:21:58

Okay, first off here are the differences.  Impulse is ONLY required to PATCH sins.  NOTHING ELSE.

Steam requires you to have it running CONSTANTLY so you can even PLAY your games.

Your arguement is therefore null and void.

June 3, 2009 04:46:21

No Soase for you, then.
Boxed version of original game is around, but all its patches and expansions are going to be coming out on Impulse.

Whatever your reason.
That's all.

Hard luck for you.

June 3, 2009 05:30:27

hang on, have you ever even used impulse???

Your argument is utterly ridiculous when you look at it.  I mean, would you only buy things like clothes from your favourite shop and never buy anything from anywhere else?

You are not going to find anyone who agrees with you over why you are not buying the game.
