Forum Update - April 2, 2009

Minor update, but important

By Posted April 2, 2009 12:12:14

The forums have been updated again today with a minor change.  If a user edits his/her post, there will now be a "View Edits" button.  Clicking this button will show a history of that reply/post, along with highlights (red = removed text, green = added text).

If you do not see the button or clicking the button does nothing, please do a "hard refresh" by holding Ctrl and pressing F5.  This will clear your cache and force a download of the new image and javascript file.

Hopefully this will reduce the amount of griefers who go back and edit all of their posts.

Is this feature only applied to the replies or will the OP also show edits? Often that is edited to the point that all further replies are meaningless,or at least very confusing.

The OP shows edits too.

At least one person has been permanently removed from Stardock's sites due initially to inappropriate forum edits.

Correcting typos is one thing.....revising the actual content to make respondents look 'silly' is entirely another....

The loss of the 'time-limited' edit function was "unfortunate" to say the least.  This is a welcome improvement, arguably superior to the old 'time-limit'...

Hrm, that will keep me from being a goof and doing what I said back up in reply 33, that or I saw the future and someone pulled that lol.

[e digicons][/e] That will eliminate some confusion then.  I am liking this new feature. Now if only we could get our guestbooks back with a working "Remove Comment" button.[e digicons][/e]

And ZubaZ really si a good bloke.

Zu....when you edit my posts....you're gonna hafta improve your spelling......it's a dead give-away.....remember....I can spell..... Spell checker ...

Zubaz
The OP shows edits too.

Doesn't seem to work on other people's OP, just showing up for my OPs.

http://forums.sinsofasolarempire.com/335474 every time I try to pull up this topic I get an IE error saying it cant pull up the page. Operation is aborted. Is it something on end or did this update mess it up?

April 3, 2009 14:43:11

Duh- Loup, why would you want to View_Edits other's first post? I believe this sort of power belongs to site moderators only and i can understand the reasons.

I can edit mines and view them... but it's by curiosity that i would "return" to yesterday's comments by someone if it all seemed incoherent.

The Anti-DRM thread by pyalot was locked for good reasons. This view stuff will prevent us from sounding completely off-topic to an otherwise honest reply taken in a REAL context.

Best weapon against Trolls, i've ever heard of.

If this was caused by a script kiddy work (IN a post), i'd cut the thick grass they walk on for a post or two right under their dancing steps of membership hopes. But i'm not SD's GunslingerBara, by far.

It's a Stardock issue.  The web devs are working on it now.

I'm just responding to an answer Zubaz gave at the top of this page saying that it doesn't do what he said...

Our goal is to have all non-mod edits availalbe (and hopefully without breaking anything )

Knowing waht was changed is a great deterrent for trolls.

Why wouldn't anyone is the better question.

If the OP starts a thread and there are negative responses, sometimes the OP is going to go back and alter the post. Then any replies afterwards often make no sense or make the replies seem foolish. The ability to "view edits" will discourage the OP from simply denying posting the original content or altering it to his/her liking.

Am I making any sense?[e digicons][/e]

Am I making any sense?

Yes, you are... but my non-moderating status is certainly very happy for those responsible for bringing order & reasonable truth (as in control over false assumptions) into, sometimes, outright hypocrisy shown by Trolls or people with bad agendas & unconstructive manners.

Game over, AFAIC.

April 3, 2009 15:56:51

[e digicons][/e]  Now everyone will see my bad spelling and at times worse grammar.

So...I'm confused here.  You like the view_edits thing due to the effect it'll have on trolls, but you seem to think it's inherently wrong to see the OP's edits?  Somehow I think you'd welcome the sight of the OP's edits for that very reason.

I'm cornfused...

April 3, 2009 16:26:23

It's just one of those times again where i am being "misinterpreted" for me not having used the proper phrasing, sorry.

We certainly can view any OP's edits, but this feature is terribly MORE useful to site managers & moderators than any of us.

Correct? [e digicons]:jafo:[/e]

April 3, 2009 16:30:31

Right...but I cannot for some reason see that little View Edits button on a OP I know has been edited.  That's what I was hinting to above...I only see that View Edit button on a thread I had started and had edited.

Firefox 3 for any interested.  Scratch that...also not seeing it in IE7

BTW, yeah..my UT was on the fritz I guess.

Correct?
I thnk that with the availablitlity of post history users will "self-edit" more and live with thier mistakes and we'll all be better off.

In the end, moderators may have to do less (not that we have to do much  . . . because this *is* a great community).

April 3, 2009 16:36:58

You shouldn't be trying to encourage eets to post, you know how much he likes compliments.

He'd just make you work for it.

April 3, 2009 16:49:20

I think he meant that now that the public can see their edits, anything they post now will be seen, not just what they edit to....and thus people may think twice before posting a nasty reply.

April 3, 2009 16:58:01

... and be extra-careful when hitting the "Post Reply" button, i might add. Let's take a few seconds here to check what's in the previous phrase. Yep, no typos. No further edits necessary.

Click.

April 3, 2009 17:37:50

Typos aren't that big a deal though. Who cares about them. Besides, it doesn't highlight each letter individually, so someone would actually have to try and spot the typos in the view edits too.
