Windows Blinds trial expires...

And deletes my Vista Aero theme with it.

By Posted December 29, 2008 23:47:38

I love Windows Blinds, but this is infuriating. My trial expired today, and I uninstalled it. So, what happens? It DELETES my windows aero window theme with the software itself, so I'm stuck with Classic forever! What is going on here? Is this a marketing trap so I have to buy it? Did this software just delete my default vista layout? That's so unfair.

I really need help with this, really fast, because I'm not going to be stuck with this ugly classic layout for more than a day. I go to "Theme" on the default menu and I click "Windows Vista" and it just stays as classic. What is going on?!

Reinstall the trial, reboot, open up WB configuration and set it back to default (Aero window theme), check it first to make sure ever thing is back.  Then uninstall the trial and reboot.  That should fix it.  You should be able to then go into Properties by right clicking on the desktop as normal.

Post back on where or not it worked.

Philly, when it expires, and if you re-install it,  I don't think you have an option to change anything, I don't think you can get into it? it's just a screen telling you it's expired? not sure[e digicons][/e]

Another option would be a system restore to a point before you uninstalled WB's.Then reapply the Aero theme in WB config. and uninstall WindowBlinds.

It just says "Your trial has expired. Please purchase it" and I try to furiously click the Vista Aero default, theme, but all it does it close....

EDIT: Nothing  is working, and I have no idea what is going on with this theme. It's just staying the ugly classic theme and there is no way I can change it back. Wow, I try to enter the Windows Blinds program JUST to click on the vista theme, but it simply closes, applying no changes whatsoever.

If I do that, then won't it delete the files I've used today? That'll be really bad, because I've done a lot of stuff on this today and it'll just wipe out my work.

December 30, 2008 00:26:20

Can you get the theme again? or is it actually missing?

Another suggestion[e digicons]out:[/e] you could always download a trial of something similar, just long enough to fix your problem.. then back it up, again, I don't know

Yes it will. You will need to back up everything you have saved after the restore point you have chosen.Windows may have created a point when WB's was uninstalled,so you only have to save todays work if that is the case.

Hm... I'm going to try something that I think may work. Thanks, Tails, for the tip. If it doesn't work I'll be back in a few minutes.

You are all GENIUSES! Thank you so much! I am now uninstalling Windows Blinds, and my default Vista theme is back! This is so awesome, now it's not all windows 95-ish! Thanks for all your help! Now, off to the shiny, glassy menus again!

Very glad you got everything back.

Now, when are you going to get the full version of WindowBlinds, you did like it, didn't you?

December 30, 2008 00:55:39

[e digicons][/e]  Glad to hear it's straightened out. If you loved WindowBlinds,you'll be back someday.[e digicons][/e] It's rather habit-forming.

They don't sell physical copies, do they? I'll definitely buy it, but I think I'll take the by-mail option. My favorite theme is GPod 2, so I already know what theme I'm getting once I buy the full version.

I still love WindowBlinds, but that whole trial thing scared me a bit. Obviously the full version won't have these things happen, so I'm definitely buying this. Is this available at electronics stores?

Thanks

I'm going to a bunch of electronics stores this week, so I am buying a lot of things. If they do sell WindowBlinds as software at stores like Best Buy or Circuit City, it's on the top of my list of purchases right next to that apple keyboard I want to get.

System restore keeps stuff used since the last restore point if it is within your user folder, recently installed programs and stuff saved on desktop does get wiped.

Hooray!!!.

Check out this link for Stardcok products.  WindowBlinds is a good way to start with customizing your desktop.  You might want to give Object Desktop a look.  It includes WindowBlinds and a bunch more programs,  Well worth the money.  http://www.stardock.com/

You can either do an online download or get a physical copy.  Online download works great and if anything ever happens, like a reformat of the your HDD, Stardock will get you back up with what ever products you have brought.

We will be modifying the WB trial to automatically revert back to the Aero theme in future updates.

You could have reverted back via the usual options built into Windows, but in the future WBConfig will revert it when it displays the trial expired message.

Uh..Oh!!!! mmmmuuuuuaaaaa!!! Another person about to get sucked into this incredible habit forming and addicting world! Alek, I can pretty much guarantee you will not be disappointed in your purchase of Object Desktop. Alas....so many toys with it, and so little time! When you purchase, don't plan on getting any sleep for several days you will be too busy playing!

Good news, Neil. [e digicons]5*[/e]

I can imagine that what Alek had to go through to restore his system after the trial was up may be the kind of thing that would scare people away from buying the full version.
