Will someone explain the benefits of using Impulse, when clearly its a disservice to the people who use it? - especially those behind a bitchy firewall?

Smaller download sizes.

Quicker patching (using patchers makes for a lot of developer 'overhead' work, so more time can be spent patching, less time testing the stuff to install the patch).

Ease of use -- 99.9% of people have no troubles running Impulse, and so far most of the problems have been 'growing pains' that have quickly been ironed out.

Patch Control -- this is an SD benefit, this lets them more easily control who the patch gets to, preventing pirates from going anywhere.

99,9% works?   where'd u get that number,  as far as im aware alot of people are having troubles with this,  even people that do not post on these forums

i'd be surprised if more then 75% actually got it to work

If you'd read a few posts down, I gave how I guestimated that number.  Personally, I was in the public beta for it and didn't have a single problem from then to now, except for some trouble that had nothing to do with Impulse -- for example, my school's internet connection suxxors (in places)!

So sorry to disillusion you, but i don't know, how many players bought a non english version, like me. And i used this wonderful and intelligent impulse, to decide which files have to be downloaded and my SoasE was scrap after this, because the files aren't localized.

So do me the pleasure and prove your calculation...

And yes i am a old school player, means i am interested if 5 years here all will work again, if i do a new installation, because i bought the right of playing this game for thousand or more years.

I still have my Amiga. So i have time to test this out. And if it won't work, it is a kind of thievery [e digicons]8C[/e]

Actually, that I will agree with being a problem -- something that should have been dealt with before hand.

That said, it's been 5 years since the original GC came out, and if I wanted to I could install it via Impulse little/no problem.

It IS necessary for Stardock's business model... There are numerous posts as to why it is beneficial etc... Your best bet is to contact support@stardock.com rather then just bitch about it. Impulse is here to stay and the Sins manual states that it will be the method for updating the game...

I have to say good job stardock. The download of 1.1 took only about a minute it was fast as hell. The game itself is even more amazing now to. The graphics look a lot better and so do the new meshes. The AI is a lot smarter than it used to be to which is nice. All in all keep it up Brad and Stardock good job. Looking forward to seeing  entrenchemnt now.

Try living in Australia with slow net and usage quotas, its taken me half an hour to get 10% done. And once we hit or quota limit and get slowed down further it would take even longer.

Having a hard copy of the patch on hard drive would be incredibly useful, should reinstall be necessary.

I'm in Australia - same "problem".

You can do what you asked for - make an archive file in Impulse. And when the next patch comes out, you only need to download the files that are different (i.e. the delta) and these are compressed when they are sent to you. So you don't need to download a 100MB everything combined patch to apply 20 MB of required changes...

I'd also suggest you get an account with higher usage limits to prevent shaping, or get a faster plan or download it during off peak time.....
