WHY!? WHY!? WHY!? WHY!?

By Posted August 20, 2008 22:49:54
What is the purpose of this bloated piece of software? I was hoping for a slick streamlined way to update my games. What I got was a clunky sluggish piece of software that barely works, and clandestinely installs a piece of junk application launcher without telling you how to disable it.

All I want is a way to automatically and quickly update my game (SoSE). Why am I forced to use the steaming heap of dung that is Impulse to do this?

Here's the constructive part: Give me a streamlined tool to update my game(s) without installing any crapware on my PC.

I see nothing constructive here.

Nope.  Just more bitch and moan, bitch and moan.

Maybe I'm glad I've never played multiplayer Sins games with any of you, because so many of you sound like such whiny little pissants.

I'm impressed that you could get multiplayer to work. Whenever I've tried I can't even get the damn thing to connect.

Thanks for your constructive comments BTW.

Right click on the dock and select close and it will stop running until you start it up yourself.

Oh...there ARE questions there.....at first glance it looked like yet another rant/complaint.

1. The purpose of the software is to integrate ALL Stardock's products into one convenient, self-contained interface/installer...as has been the case for many years now.  Impulse just happens to be the newest version there-of.

I'm sure if you only have one game or other product it may look like 'overkill' but for those who have on-going interactions/updates with multiple software/games it's darn sensible and functional.

2. You are not 'forced' to do anything at all.

However if you WISH to receive game updates you are required to use Impulse to both manage it/them correctly and to verify registrations, etc.  That is the price of copyright protection.

Now....I can copy/paste these responses into all squillion [seemingly] other tirades/queries/threads....and make life easier...

Lately, when I get the urge to check out one of these RPG games, a thread like this pops up. I even posted on Impulse for advice on what the best game would be for me and I got 2 replies.

Don't do it, man. It isn't worth it.

The second reply agreed with the first.

It's all been very discouraging.

There just seems to be an awful lot of negativity around the forums lately.

Impulse is good. It's easy to use and it doesn't do anything you can't control. You don't want it to run, exit. It won't auto start or load anything into your system startup unless you tell it to. And, if you change your mind and don't want it to auto start anymore it takes just two clicks of the mouse to turn that feature off again.

Impulse has been keeping me up to date on my software like a champ. I even update my video drivers with it and it works perfectly.

Honest guys I'm not making this up. Impulse is easy and it's non-intrusive. I do not get unwanted pop-ups with it. My email account isn't being flooded with spam. The Stardock materials I receive by email I've asked for and no new third parties are trying to jump on the band wagon to me through Impulse. Just straight up.

And on an aside Po' I like this avatar of yours a lot more than that prior red lamp thingy. lol Anyway if you like games you could try Sins of a Solar Empire. I have it and like it just fine. I play the single player mode against the AI and it's improved a great deal in this latest Beta 1.09. Thumbs up from me.

It also as a multiplayer mode but, that's never been my bag. Sins has made it to my favorites list along side Axis & Allies, Empire Earth I & II and NWN II. Anyway you get the idea all are RTS ans some role playing. My favorite there is still Oblivion.

@ PynaeusClaw,

You couldn't get the SINS MP to connect because you didn't follow the steps in my guide.

As for Impulse, there are more than enough threads asking for help who were provided that help and are now up and running. Instead of creating yet another bitch-thread why not put your reading-glasses to use and learn something.

I would think that if you wanted more constructive comments on the thread then maybe you should have put more thought and less ranting into your original post.

Damn, I don't like Impulse neither... it don't let me access my Playboy subscription and won't change my address on the Electoral Roll... more to the point, it don't fetch coffee or make sandwiches., damned piece of junk.

OK, still not constructive but it makes just about as much sense as...

Why am I forced to use the steaming heap of dung that is Impulse to do this?

Yup, I wonder why I have to sit through the commercial breaks on TV????

Oh, that's right... I don't! I could get up and make a cuppa... or simply not watch TV at all if it got/gets up my nose that bad.

Seriously, while Impulse may have presented some users with teething problems, I can't say that I've had any real issues with it and feel it is shaping up to be a mighty fine app that's quite pleasant and easy to use. No complaints here!
August 21, 2008 05:20:29
I agree, now, let's stop bumping. lol

It's nice to see that I don't even need to respond to a thread to get my name dragged through the mud.

I'll respond with an equivilent level of maturity.

Get Bent.

The people insulting users who come here with a complaint--whether you feel it's justified or not--need to stop. It doesn't help anyone, and it certainly doesn't help the poster's complaints get addressed, or doubts assuaged. If you think someone's got an unjustified aversion to Impulse, and can't respond constructively, just don't reply and leave it to us.

To the OP,

and clandestinely installs a piece of junk application launcher without telling you how to disable it.

The quickload option was just added and can be disabled in Impulse's preferences. I do agree personally that it should be off by default, but I'm not involved in its development (forum mod).

What sort of issues other than that are causing you to feel that Impulse is bad? If it's mostly performance (we are working on that), what are your system specs and net speed?

Struck a nerve, I guess.  My opinion of the approach of certain complainers is no less valid than their opinions/rants about Impulse.

Before you criticize someone you should at least wait until they make a comment in the thread in question.

Criticizing someone who's said nothing in the current thread, has never created a single Impulse related thread (complaint or otherwise), and in all actuality responds to very few of the literally hundreds of Impulse threads that scroll by daily, merely reveals yourself to be the troll that you are.
August 21, 2008 16:47:18

If I've mistaken you for someone else, my apologies, mumble.  I'll leave it to others to decide who is more insulting & who's the troll.

August 21, 2008 16:48:22
You are not 'forced' to do anything at all

Um, look, I'm really trying to question my initially strong bad reaction to the Rise of Impulse, but this kind of semantics does not help maintain or increase my confidence that Stardock are the productive mavericks I've come to assume they are.

If you are not offering standalone patches nor continuing support for SDC, then folks wanting to purchse a new title from you (e.g. NotMoM) are "forced" to buy a raw product and help pay for the ongoing development that will not be available to them.

representative of gamers in general

Best to take each person as he or she comes at you. This whole "in general" thing is a serious problem for social systems ranging from small offices to the community of nations. When you use a fuzzy group label to praise or condemn someone, you are already on the primrose path to irrational conflict.

Well....this just about says it all! While I agree the OP could have phrased his statements better and a little more professional, we don't need to continue to throw gas on the fire.

Can't we all just get along and have fun like we used to?
