ObjectDock Weather Docklet not working anymore

By Posted May 11, 2008 13:27:21

Hi all.

I had OD running for over one and a half years now and the weather docklet always worked. Since Thursday or Friday it only displays "Weather Information not Available". Is there somenthing wrong with weather.com?

I've noticed this, too. Did weather.com change the source this information was being fed from?

which weather docklet?

which weather docklet?

The default weather docklet that's bundled with OD.

I'm having the same trouble, at first I thought it might have been because I'm in a city outside the US, and getting the docklet to recognize my city code was kind of a nuisance, but I tried entereing US cities and still nothing. I hope it's temporary, I really like the default docklet.

In the meantime, any suggestions for possible replacements would be nice.

depending on the version of Odock you're running the docklet either draws from weather.com or accuweather

if you do a search in the Odock gallery there's several in there - they just don't have flyouts that I recall

It's the one that draws from weather.com

And go me, I tried updating to the newest version, and it works fine. Why I didn't think of this before, I have no idea.

kratonator, have you tried just installing a new version?

For those of you having a problem with the weather docklet, since it was working before, did you make any changes in security programs or firewalls that could be blocking it getting access to update?

Just a thought.

Not intentionally, but there was a Windows update about a week ago, it's possible it closed a security hole that also interfered with this I suppose. The fact that it stopped working for both of us at the same time leads me to believe it wasn't an isolated incident.

No problems at all with weather updates in Stockton CA on XP and Vista. I very seldomly use it and added one just for giggles because of this forum post and it is working fine.

There are several questions you can ask yourself at this point, such as when was the last time it actually ran? What's changed in your system since? Could it be an issue from your provider or your firewall? Do I restore the system to the point before the weather stopped working? Do I archive all of my docks and uninstall then reinstall OD?

Take ownership of your system, you'll make the right choice.

G'Luk!

Hi all and thanks for the answers.

There are too many people who have the same problem so I suppose that there is something with a port or something (I have all my firewall ports open, just in case it matters). Well...I guess I'll have to investigate a little more...

Cheers,

If you have an old version it is likely linked to weather.com which we are no longer working with. Simply update to correct the issue. If you have the current free version there were several server fixes that are available but only to the Plus beta. The free version will not be updated with these fixes until the next full version of Object Dock is launched.

If you have the Plus version and you are getting this issue please try out the current beta. If you have done that and still have troubles please let us know at support@stardock.com.

I see the V1.9 of the freeware Objectdock still does not work for cities like Oslo, Norway and Stockholm, Sweden.

How far away is the new version where weatherdock works?

October 22, 2008 14:24:04

The free version does work but certain servers on AccuWeather are simply not available to it. You likely can pick locations near where you are trying to set it to and it will respond to one of them. This isn't guaranteed of course but it is likely. version 2.0 is still under development but no release date has been set yet. We will announce more as the information comes to us.

My weather dock no longer shows the correct temperature.  It logs in and can open Accuweather, but does not show the same information as the weather page on the web.  I am using the free version.

December 16, 2008 13:33:43

Same here. I am in Canada and it shows that the temp is -1 as it is -18. When I double click it says local weather not available yet I can get to accuweather by clicking the link in dock properties/options. I have used this for a while and no problems till I saw this thread. Is there a way to change the weather server to a different weather provider?

What locations are you using for the docklet? Have you tired the fix that is posted above?

December 16, 2008 17:23:09

same here, the weather info has not updated for about 3 days. Today is Tuesday and the weather flyout is still showing wed through sun.

It seems to be connecting but just not updating the information. I changed the zip code and it returns the same incorrect time span of information for a different location.

17dec08 Starting work for me also. Thanks!

I tried the version of the dll above and I get the same result.  I am in Austin, Texas.  I have used Austin, and my zip code and I get an eroneous result.  If I use a nearby city or town, I get no result at all.  This was working perfectly until a little over a week ago.  It is the same on all of my computers.

Well, after a bit of hacking, it seems the weather docklet uses a custom StarDockWeather OCX to access the weather from SDCENTRAL.NET, as opposed to accuweather directly. I guess this is to minimize the traffic to accuweather. The weather docklet does correctly show the weather as SDCENTRAL.NET shows it, HOWEVER SDCENTRAL.NET doesn't seem to be updating from accuweather anymore. Somebody at StarDock wanna fix this before all my customers complain?

Please fix!!!  It's looking pretty silly with my computer saying 45 deg and it is freezing rain and 28 outside!  It just started working.  Same weather as on the accuweather web page.

December 18, 2008 02:55:28

I've had some problems with the dock giving the "No Information Available" message when I pull my laptop out of standby. However, if I right click and choose update it always starts right up. Otherwise, I'm not sure.

Hang a sock on the clothesline, and each morning, just check the sock..

If it's dry, it's warm outside.

If it's wet, it's raining.

If it's singed, there's lightening.

If it has holes in it, it's hailing [e digicons][/e]

The same for me here. However, the weather in Illinois has been so crappy lately that "no news is good news"[e digicons][/e]
