Before installing Twilight of the Arnor Read This

Today is Release Day! Yay!  I know that you've all been waiting for this day for a long time, but hopefully you'll think that the end result is worth it.  We're very happy with it here.  Twilight is now available for download!  If you have any problems after following these tips, you can hop on irc.stardock.com and we'll try to help you.  Anyway, I have a few tips to make sure that that you don't have problems installing the full version of Twilight.

First, update Dark Avatar and Dread Lords if you haven't been keeping them up to date.  That way, you won't load up Twilight only to get an annoying pop up.

Second, un-install the beta of Twilight if you have it installed.  Check to make sure that the folder and all its contents were removed.  This will ensure that you get a clean install should avoid any problems of files not being fully updated, etc.

Third, if you decide to play Dark Avatar or Dread Lords while you wait, make sure that you exit the game before attempting to update any of the modules.  Otherwise, the installer may go to update a file only to find that it's been locked by the game and can't be removed.

Fourth, make sure that you remove or rename your My Documents\My Games\GC2TwilightArnor folder so that Twilight can start with a new one.  This will avoid any problems due to the custom race xml files not being updated, ship files with old information, etc.  Save games from the beta should still load, but you may want to start a new game anyway to be on the safe side.

If you are installing from SDC and you run into problems, go to Tools->Internet Settings and refresh the XML data, then restart SDC.  Whether you're installing from SDC or Impulse, make sure that you have the latest version.  You can also try switching servers.  All updates get posted on US-1 first and then the data has to sync to US-2, so if you start downloading immediately after we post it, your best bet is to be on US-1, but later in the day, US-2 might have less traffic if everyone is trying US-1.  If it doesn't show up, you may also need to un-check the Show Pre-Release versions option.

Well, it will re-download the whole thing if necessary but there is an easy way to back up your files. I don't know how you do it in Impulse (don't have it) but in Stardock Central you just right-click on the item you want to back up and there's an "Archive Application" option. It creates a single file that you can then burn to a CD/DVD, if you wish. If you need to reinstall, start SDC, go to File --> Restore Archive and point it to that file.

This works in Impulse too. Right clicking on things tends to be the only way to get access to the advanced options such as archiving.

Well....Impulse did not offer an uninstall option for the beta after updating.

No matter it seems to have installed fine. I did read this in time to rename the options folder

Hopefully installing after deleting everything works.

I had the download up for the last 30minutes or so downloading at almost 600kb/sec
The install went to 100% 4-5 times and kept restarting.

Poping in to thank you for this post. When I first tried to update, the installer kept downloading the file over and over. It took me a while to notice that becase I'm used to starting downloads then ignoring them for a while. I kept looking back and kept seeing that it wasn't done yet, but that it was going at 1800KB/s. I was thinking it was a large file until the next time I looked the percentage had gone down. Then I pulled up the site and saw this post in the side bar. So if you had several downloads from my IP, sorry.

All fixed now. I should have thought to at least uninstall it on my own.

Does the archiving set itself up as an ISO image burn to disk, or does it back itself up in an encrypted Impulse format, meaning that Impulse needs to be installed first? I kinda like being able to burn archives to an old skool CD install state, for when I go for a 'spring clean' and wipe the whole hard drive.  There also doesn't seem to be any mention of the download size of Arnor or bundled pack. Anyone able to tell me the size of the downloads? Thanks.

The Impulse archives are made specifically for it, so yes, you need Impulse installed.

I just archived all of my GalCiv2 stuff in Impulse, and here's what I got:

GalCiv2: 1.24 GB
Dark Avatar: 254 MB
Twilight: 347 MB

Poping in to thank you for this post.

The Stardock people are quite helpful... I don't think divine intervention will be necessary. Although... I did always want to take a ride in that car. Are there snacks?

I have paid for Twilight but the button in the games list in stardock central still says "purchase" not "download". Am I being a complete idiot?

Sorry to be a bother. Can't wait to play the game. Sorry, if this is a double post. I keep posting this thread but whenever i look at the forum it's not listed.

I'm having the same problem as sethai and others. I just bought twilight and it won't even show up in the stardock list. i've even registered the serial and it remembers it, i just can't figure out how to download it. Love GalCiv2, will never download using stardock again, though!
thanks

Ok here might be a stupid question but I cannot figure it out. I bought the original GalCiv II when it came out. A boxed version. I skipped the first expansion but with the second coming out I got interested again and would like to get Twilight. The requirement for Twilight say that it needs Dark Avatar OR GalCiv II Gold. Does that mean I only need Twilight or do I have to purchase both Dark Avatar AND Twilight???

please help the confused!!!!

If you have only the base game, then you will need to buy DA as well in order to use TA, yes.

I have Galactic Civilization II Gold, version 1.5 and when I run the Arnor expansion, I get a pop stating: Galactic Civilizations 2: Dark Avatar needs to be updated to version 1.80c.096 or higher in order to run Twilight of the Arnor. On Stardock though, the available list has ---- under it, meaning there is no newer version? Anyhow, I can run Twilight just fine, but the pop up is annoying.

Have you expanded the + next to GC2, and checked DA for the new version?

My Raid5 hard drives have crashed and I and about to ditch them and do a clean install on a single drive. ( much less hassle)

I have all the incarnations of gc2. I only want to play TA.

Which versions do I need to install and in which order?  Thanks.

The game itself is running fine with me. The only problem I am finding with it is that I do not have an inital menu screen. I mean the one that has "Play Game", "Switch Chapters" ect.  When I start the Arnor game (select the program or the shortcut icon) It opens straight the second menu. "New Game, Load Game, ect ect" I noticed this only because I wanted to look at the new editors and apparently they are on the primary menu.

Is there a chance I forgot to download something? Is it not out  yet (like the manual)? Or am I doing something stupid...which given my lack of computer knowledge is what I am figuring.  Again, aside from that menu not showing up,the game works beautifully. I am really loving it.

The launcher should be there regardless of which the shortcut is set to run--check the folder where the game is installed at in explorer (or just use search), the file you're looking for is TALaunch.exe.

Ive installed Twilight/Uninstalled/installed/un/in...4 times now and the same problem is occuring...the game keeps skipping both in audio and graphics, almost as if I dont have enough RAM, but I do.  Gal II and DA both run fine but Twilight keeps skipping.  Cant for the life of me figure it out...any ideas.  (ps..if you have any ideas please understand that I am computer illiterate)  Thanks   Nelbo

Nelbo -- please start a new thread as follows (don't reply here since it's a different issue):

Please open your debug.err file in notepad, and copy/paste the contents into a post here. This will give us some technical information that can help troubleshoot your problem. The location you'll find the debug.err in varies depending on which game you're playing:

Dread Lords: My Documents\My Games\GalCiv2
Dark Avatar: My Documents\My Games\GC2DarkAvatar
Twilight of the Arnor: My Documents\My Games\GC2TwilightArnor

Older versions may store the debug directly in the location the game is installed at.

Be sure to copy the debug immediately after the error occurs; if you start the game again, the debug will be erased and recreated for the new session.
