Year Zero Club

...when simply winning is not enough!

By Posted February 22, 2008 13:02:02

First off, I couldn't have done this without the inspiration of the Metaverse League and Wyndstar in particular. Kudos to the master!

Now to the matter at hand.

I finally did it. A year zero win! Granted, it was only against 1 AI and on challenging (my current level) but I'm certain that 'tough' wouldn't have been much harder. On the other hand, it was my first attempt at an 'all-labs' and 'lease instead of buy' approach, so I consider myself proud that I could do it at all.

Here is the link to the character, as a proof: http://metaverse.galciv2.com/index.aspx?g=player&id=14517

For all of you, who like me thought that year zero wins are nigh impossible: Try it! Read the posts about it! It is difficult, requires constant micromanagement, but I found it incredibly rewarding to see that victory screen after 25 - 30 turns. Not the way I'd like to play constantly, but as a change of pace, it's a incredible challenge.

And of course, once you've accomplished your first 'Year Zero', post here and rejoice!

As an edit, I now include the current top score.

Attention new players!
Do not be frightened by these scores! Playing a ZYW is actually really easy, and getting a score close to 30000 points takes just a few tries. These games are usually finished in less than 20 minutes, so have at it. Try the tiny ZYWs first, I find them easier and you might get the unique chance to beat players like neilo or Wyndstar.

Current ZYW record holders:

'expert' ZYW - Gigantic

1) 198450 points - MottiKhan

2) 119000 points - Kzinti Patriarch

3) 109500 points - neilo

'classic' ZYW - Tiny

1) 56700points - MottiKhan

2) 40600 points - Kzinti Patriarch / Magnumaniac

3) 38850 points - Wyndstar

Also, the 100% or 300% tiles seem very common on my starting homeworld with the ZYW settings I use. Can anybody point to a thread that speaks to bonus tile generation?

There were changes made about the time of DA 1.6 that altered how bonus tiles were distributed, and then I think they tweaked it again toward the end of the 1.7s build. Those would probably be the best places to start KP.

I seem to recall that its a set amount of bonuses percentages per map that are distributed by map size, number of tiles, worlds that are higher than Class 5? I think (you won't get them on lower worlds), supposedly Luck ability, and then a certain random factor.

(IIRC the bonus tiles are divided into "classes" and some are more prevalent than others, ie manu tiles are more common than research tiles; and its the percentage given to the Class that actually decides on appearance)

I've never hadone either. I'm new to the club at teetering on breaking the 20K mark.

I have had every tile on my HW be a bonus tile. They sure do help to break the 30K mark.
April 9, 2008 14:39:43
Yeah, I've cracked the 24k mark. I'm coming for ya Neilo....
April 9, 2008 18:28:59
32900K is the mark to beat. And rest assured i have a few tricks up my sleeve that, given a favorable starting map and HW should allow me to come close to 35K....
April 10, 2008 03:27:53
Well, the game is on. I'll be aiming for my first 30k win this weekend!
April 10, 2008 07:47:27
they do, but it is rare

Yea, the precursors aren't known for building libraries anymore.

Since everyone is showing off ZYWs, I think its not too boastful to show off the first ever recorded ZYW as far as I can remember, done by yours truly.
I'm no Wyndstar, so don't laugh.

Double post. Sorry.

It would be cool if yours was the first one mate...but Kryo had ZYW's very early on...i think in the beta's of DA. Check his profile they are on there.
April 10, 2008 08:58:42
Kryo definitely had a bunch, quite a while ago. I wonder if some other Stardock people have as well?

Very Nice KP!!! Maybe he'll stop being such an arrogant frakkard now hehe
April 11, 2008 02:04:16
Well done KP!!

I have been expecting this, and as such i have a game ready to go.....

The HW has 3 X 300% research bonus tiles on it. I hope to break 35K with it.

Good game mate, did ya end up going spore on that game?
April 11, 2008 02:08:35

Doh!

Yep, I have been using spore lately, but havent seen it increase my average score. It's a bit quicker than PI though, which is the benefit. The drawback is it lowers yor population score. So I think those two things generally tend to cancel each other out in terms of scoring.

Well, there was a challenge I couldn't resist

April 11, 2008 16:04:15
Magnumaniac! Welcome back! And such an entrance
April 11, 2008 16:51:53

Oh bugger!

Congrats Magnumaniac!    I'll be trying to surpass that too.

Welcome back Mag!!!! And what a way to announce your return!!!

That is a frakking awesome score. Care to share anything in particular you did to achieve it?

(Quick KP get out the pen and paper to write this down....)

Great to see you back Mag.

Hi Neilo, KP, Justinsane et al

I figured the Kzinti had got a big enough lead over the Diplomats to warrant a return    That and dusting off the strategy ready for an immense galaxy in TA

Awesome achievement on the 250 games, by the way, I can't bang them out at under 10 minutes yet!

Nothing much different done to what has already been discussed here - just focus on the 3 most important things:

Economy, economy, & economy - even in a short 13 turn game it makes a big difference. Still working out the optimal research order, but have advanced the target a bit further now - 37100 on the last one, and that was done with only one research bonus tile (a 300%).

Have fun beating it - I've got an all abundant gigantic galaxy bubbling, that needs some immediate diplomatic intervention
April 11, 2008 20:05:57
That is spectacularly good news. First off - 37,100 is just crazyness. You just leaped past what the acknowledged ZYW masters had thought may be the theoretical limit (35,000). Nicely done. I'm even more glad to hear you've returned to the Metaverse battlefield, Achilles style, to re-enforce the Diplomats against the rampaging Kzinti hordes (composed of good guys, but nonetheless, they need to be stopped).
April 11, 2008 20:11:32
Wow....awesome game Magnumaniac!    And welcome back too.

Like Neilo, I didnt think past 35k was possible unless in the event of some improbably amazing setup. I just did another one for 32,900k, but couldnt milk any more out of it, even though I tried about 10 times.

So at the moment, I'm off to try and igure out how the heck you did 37k, Magnumaniac...

I, too, would just ONCE like a precursor library.

But this was also done with a +300% research tile:

I'm going to see if I get a good set of starting tiles to see how high I can go, you all have me curious now.

New mark to beat: 38850

Are guys playing the whole year out or finishing on April 8th?
All my games have been on April 8th or at least very close to. The 32950K game was on April 8th.

Maybe it's time i play out the year.

Awesome score Mag and Wyndstar....mind blowing....

April 12, 2008 03:32:20
Mine was April 15th...
