Rise of the Kzinti

Kzinti Empire ranked #4 on Metaverse and #3 on AltMeta

By Posted September 6, 2007 14:41:21
Throughout the galaxy, a signal suffuses all communication frequencies, and the seal of the imperial Riit family appears on every viewscreen. The symbol dissolves to be replaced by the image of Hraak-Riit, 4th son of the Patriarch:

"Listen well, for I speak the words of the Patriarch himself. Many foes have been slain by the Kzinti, their carcasses left to rot in the sun for the scavengers to pick their bones clean. Much glory has been won and our people are nourished by the flesh & blood of our fallen foes. There now remain only three empires that are more powerful than the Kzinti, but they are old, bloated, and complacent, while our thirst for conquest will never be sated! They will be devoured as all others have been, and we will assert our natural dominance over the other species of this galaxy. All true Heroes must join with our ferocious t’kzintar, or be prepared to meet us in battle. Those who choose to resist the natural order of the universe will soon find the jaws of the Kzinti at their throats! Join us today, or perish…"

Hey, KP, where's that terrifying portrait you used to show?
I used to have nightmares where it was licking my face...(well, actually, that was Cricket, a possibly related alien representative.)

drrider, the Kzinti are from Larry Niven's excellent Ringworld, and its many not-so-excellent sequels.

Yes, also many other books as well based in the "Known Space" universe of Larry Niven. I read a lot of the "Man-Kzin Wars" series of books, which are all collections of stories about the Kzin by many different sci-fi authors.

Just do a search in google images and you can easily find all the pics. Also go to Larry Nivens page at http://www.larryniven.org/kzin/

We are quite well-fed, but eager for more battle. We now look hungrily to the bloated but moribund empire of the Orcas...h'rrrrr seafood! They are ripe for conquest.

Next goal for the Kzinti is #1 on the AltMeta. I noticed that you and I have been dueling for #1 in one of the categories on the ALtMeta. I couldnt let you have ALL three of the military #1 spots.

ghost, Larry Niven developed the Kzinti well before he summed up the mysteries of known space in Ringworld. (Teach your grandmother to suck eggs, young fella )

Actually my original question was about the terrifying visage that normally appears as KP's icon, the one that looks like it is saying "Meeyowuu". It was missing at the head of this thread.

Really? I thought Ringworld was the first appearance. Eeeeenteresting. I stand corrected.

The Kzinti also inhabit the Star Trek universe, and made an appearance in the animated series (though I havent seen it). Roddenberry & Niven were long-time friends.

I read that book too, probably when I was a teenager, but I remember it well. It was pretty interesting.

Demons aren't concerned with such matters. We both fight for the cause of evirul after all.

That is a picture of my cat Scratch (named so because we called him the devil-kitten), taken about 6 months ago when he was very small. He has been missing for over a month now. My gf and I are extremely upset about it...but at this point I dont have much hope that we'll be seeing him again.   In the picture he looks quite evil, but in actuality he was just yawning.

Thanks ghost, we sure miss the little guy a lot. So does our other cat Loki.

My younger cat is also named Loki. Older one is Kali.

Loki was originally named Eris, until the vet determined he was a male. Oops.

Yes, I do have a naming theme, heh.

Don't give up hope (though don't be an idiot about it, either .)

Exp 1) Cricket, my older adopted child, the furry one, once about 3 years ago spent 6 mo sponging off a house 2 lots up the street. They weren't encouraging him much, just feeding him a bit because he would come up on the porch and looked woeful, so apparently he just couldn't find his way home. My surmise: He had gone out post-snow-storm, when it was icing up. track evidence later indicated that he may have had a confrontation in the yard with 'The Great Enemy', a neighborhood cat fond of pushing the territorial limits of anyone who didn't live outside full-time. He either chased or was chased out of yard to street, where I lost the trail. Next door, between us and his eventual retreat, the neighbors have a G. Retriever who spent, at that time, a great deal of time outdoors ('Invisible Fence') and who chased/barked menacingly at any cats who crossed HIS territory when he was present. I think Cricket got chased into the dog yard, then further chased to the 'land beyond' which was also beyond his usual haunts. Maybe with a stay in a tree for awhile. The snow/ice stayed on the ground for 2 weeks, but melted refroze most days, thus confusing his pathfinding instincts and making his first few days really miserable. Beyond that, he managed to put the touch on the girls up the street with the porch (which they thought he was sleeping under) and the pattern was established. In the spring my wife was out walking, got to talking with one of the girls (college town, sharing a house one of the dad's owns) and the subject of losing the cat as family trauma came up. Voila!

Exp 2) (shorter) My sister-in-law brought two kittens home that had been born in grandma's barn. S-in-L goes off to college, M-in-L continues to keep the brothers. One is shy and a lap cat, one is alpha. One day he just doesn't come home for supper. Much looking eventually IDs / sees him around the neighborhood, but can't be cajoled home (apparently feral by this time). Glimpsed around every year or so, with the general rep around the neighborhood of Top Cat. Then not seen for about 4 years. One rainy fall night, I think 9 years after he went out on his own (minimum of 7 years), my M-in-L hears scratching at the front door, then some mewling. 'Lil Bit' never uses the front door, AND he is curled on the couch. Open front door; in walks Boots, looking like "an old boxer who has finally given up the ring". Goes right to the food dish, then asks for some petting. Stayed withour straying until he died about 2-3 years later.

Moral of stories:
1) Cats talk to God as a near-equal (one-way or the other). 2) God knows where you live.

Very interesting stories drrider, especially the second one! Boots sounds like a intriguing cat.

Scratch had recently taken to staying out for days at a time, with the longest being five days before he disapeared the last time. It's been 33 days now this time. When outside, he did act sort of feral. I could follow him around and hang out with him outside, but if I tried to pick him up he would growl at me...something which he never did otherwise. Inside he was cuddly and affectionate, liked being held and picked up, and often curling up to sleep in my gf's prodigiously long hair. He had an un-natural attraction to some strange things like celery, toothpaste, raisins, & my gf's iPod. Once we discovered him in the bathroom "making-out" with her toothbrush...it was very odd & absolutely hilarious. Whenever anyone was in the bathroom he had to be in there. He would leap up against the closed door with all four feet, causing it to burst open, often hard enough to smash into the wall behind! We had to warn visitors about this whenever anybody was over to our place.

Hopefully he'll come back, but I'm prepared to accept that he might not.

Thanks for the thoughts guys.

Mike

I had a cat named Cricket. He was very unique. Whenever he was puzzled about what you were doing, he'd sit up on his haunches and do a weird little clapping motion with his front paws. Cutest thing ever.
