All games start w/ 3 races!!!

Why

By Posted July 23, 2007 08:07:55
Can anyone tell me why game studios only make three races. One is the equivalent of the Starcraft Terran (TEC), another the Protoss (Advent), and the other the Zerg (Vasari)??? I mean im designing a space game with about 17 races!!! All of them are developed and worth making strategies for each. Im only sixteen so don't bother trying to buy in the near future. So if you like this game, you'll like my game due to the extensive amount of races (an options)

Cybran arty is just plain ridiculous. It is also an exception. Not the rule in this case. Most of the other units in sup com fall in line with what i said. I dont bother building Cybran arty if i can get away with it. Chose tac missiles instead.

yah, were hoping they get jessica alba as one model and jessica simpson as the other, and they can duke it out

I vote for the chuck norris pirate ship. It has 30,000,000 shields, 600,000,000 hp, and can blow up a planet with maximum planetary development in one hit.

Then I want both the unstoppable force and the immovable object placed in game. On a collision course. After all, as the old joke goes, when the unstoppable force hits the immovable object Chuck Norris dies.

pssst, I've been gaming for years (and in WoW pretty much sense release ). I know what 1337 is. If only by inference. Its just that I can't speak leet-speak. At all. And reading it... no wai.

Im using Pro-Engineer Wildfire 3.0 Student Edition to answer your question.

I've also taken out like 7 races. It will be a total of about eight races at the end. But that would be about four games that I WANT to make.

Awesome! What server/character name? I just got back on again after a long break of WoWlessness. It finally came back and throttled me in the end.

I need food.

The most obvious reason for developers to use 3 races is that beyond that you will end up repeating the same stuff. If you want really GOOD races, go for a few ones and make their differences really strong. If you go for several races, you will always end up matching part of one to another side.

Sure you can have many, many, artistic styles. But how many times can you reinvent a Battleship? A tank? A basic fighter / infantry unit?

You'll be suprised how easy it is to make units that behave the same in combat as other units and just end up having different artistic styles as their only uniqueness.

I am Rilbur, of Dalaran. Member of the mighty guild Spartans (known by that name for years, even before a certain movie of great renown )

Edit: If you want, I can add in brag about how many raid bosses I've personally slain, both pre and post BC

Galactic Civ II has 9 races I think and Warhammer 40,000 has 7.

Phalnax811 : More races doesn't equal more fun!
Its all about the game design.

Also you don't have a to wait till college to begin. If you really want to, get a book or two and start learning. I've heard that Python and their library PyGame is a good place to start.

Also, understand that it takes a VERY large amount of work to make a current 3D A+ game. So you might want to start with Tetris or Breakout or something similar to help you learn.

Its also very hard to balance anything on paper. You'll really need a prototype game to try things with, balance wise.

But I totally encourage you to try!

Having more races can backfire horribly. Take Universal Combat for example....something like 12 races...but the only difference is skin textures and some variation in wehat ships they can pilot (basically 2 different 'factions'...but some races are simply to inept to fly good ships )

I think the main reason for only 3 (or so) races is that each race should have a niche. Something it excells at. TEC seems to be a pretty basic no nonsense race, Vasari excell at mobility with their gates and Advent have superior fightercraft.

Now if you can make 10+ races each with their own niche...well done! It seems after 4 races you can get dragged down into races beeing too much like eachother or just plain sucking too much to play (or overpowered).

For Sins of a Solar Empire, its because of the story. So how many are working on your game, 50-60 ppl?Is it fully 3D like Sins and HW?The point being, is the cost.Well they could make is soo much larger with 17 races, but would you like to pay a 100$ for a game?

If it had 17 races? Yes i would.
Also i'd like to bring Age of Wonders: Shadow Magic back in the light, that game has about 17 races

I really don't think the Vasari equate to the zerg. Vasari are all about very expensive, but very few ships. I think the closest to the zerg, strategy wise, would be the TEC, they've got the cheapy ships.

Naw. I'm an Sc expert (yes, really ) and it's definetly the Advent. The one mind thing works out well with the for the swarm thing with the Zerg. Vasari = protoss and Tec = Terran.

In one hit? You mean the Roundhouse Missile? It does that, but it requires that the Chuck Norris Pirate Ship have already taken many hits, been near death, and that dramatic-but-triumphant music be playing in the background.
