Sins Official IRC Channel

Stop in and chat for a while!

By Posted October 11, 2006 21:04:08External Link
If anyone wants to stop in and chat (with us or each other) or just wants another IRC channel to idle in, the official IRC channel for Sins of a Solar Empire is accessible on irc.stardock.com, port 6667, channel #sins (if you have an IRC client that supports irc links, just click the link at the bottom of this post!).

If you don't have an IRC client already, Stardock Central has basic built-in IRC functionality. Just go to the Chat section, click connect, then type '/join #sins' in the input box (without quotes of course).

You can get SDC here if you don't have it already. Just install it and log in with your account details from the forum here and you're good to go!

Mongoose has been on a three month world tour, spreading the news of Sins to the world, the Inuits were so impressed they're marching straight to their nearest PC World to buy a computer.

I'm now coated with a combination of Alkali and Ipecac, Alkali to neutralise the stomach acid and Ipecac to induce vomiting, I can live forever!

Although that's no excuse to stop eating me, you can stop whenever. Y'know, like...now.

And only "special someones" get to call be Goosey.

What are the commands for registering a nick and for registering a channel?

Also, would you guys have any interest in having a channel set up for Pickup Games (PUG) matches? The channel would have a program called a pugbot that would help facilitate games. It works like this. You type a command to sign up to play, such as .join, and when it fills to a given number of players (say six for 3-on-3) two people become team captains and draft the other players for their team. This has been used for other games and has worked very well for setting up 5-on-5 capture-the-flag matches, prolonging the life of the original Unreal Tournament (1999). (Yes--folks still play that competitively if you can believe that, and the game's life has been prolonged by the pugbots.) I don't see why people couldn't play 5-on-5 or 6-on-6, either.

Of course, if it ever took off we'd need to have admins and rules, etc., and eventually there'd me multiple channels catering to different types of rules and games (ie, co-op, pros only, noobs only, etc.). I suppose folks could play either via Ironclad Online or via virtual private LAN network (like Hamachi).

I type in irc but all that comes back is mIRC is this the engine we are semi discussing here?

I looked on the channel list and there isn't a support channel, so they must not have services n, they did say it was a basic IRCd

September 22, 2008 08:55:27

Actually it does have Bot Services... /msg nickserv register password email, if you didn't know already

(Sorry for the double post but you know, the edit button and all that.)

Sadly, much to my chagrin, IRC is going the way of the dodo.  As far as I know it's still the best Intenet group chat program, but few younger people seem to know about it.

IRC is a standard at Stardock.  It's a very good, stable, known technology.

I love IRC.  I've been using it since the early days of the Internet (1994, 1995) and use it even more today.  (In the old days, at the universities, you would access your e-mail through PINE and then you'd connect to the IRC through that window.  Does anyone else remember PINE?)

I really wish more young folks would learn about it because it is so much better than XFire and the other chat programs; it's the best interface for large group chat.  Sadly, people who are new to the Internet hardly know what it is or that it exists.

An anecdotal example is the Unreal Tournament community.  There's a huge difference in the number of people using it to talk about each progressive game in the series.  The people who played the original Unreal Tournament (1999) used it profusely and still use it heavily to this day.  The IRC was a central component of the UT99 clan community.  It's where clan matches were organized and clan match style pickup games (PUG matches) are formed.  In contrast, few UT 2004 players, at least few North American UT 2004 players, ever used it.
